Ms. Melissa Castillo served in the US Navy and US Navy Reserves. She completed basic
training and Torpedoman’s Mate “A” School at Naval Air Station, Orlando, Florida. Her duty
station included on board the USS Simon Lake (AS-33), La Maddalena, Sardinia, Italy; Naval
Submarine Base, New London, CT; and Naval Operational Support Center, San Antonio, Texas.
For the past 18 years, Ms. Castillo has been working in the veteran’s community. She has over 13 years experience as a Veterans Service Officer helping veterans and surviving spouse obtains benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. She is accredited by National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, Texas Veterans Commission, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Ex-Prisoners of War, and the Retired Enlisted Association.
Current positions held by Ms. Castillo are Vice-President of the Veterans County Service Officer Association of Texas; committee member to the Texas Veterans Commission Veterans County Service Officers Advisory Committee and the State of Texas Delegate for the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers Association.
Ms. Castillo served as a committee member to the Secretary of the Veterans Affairs Advisor
Committee on Minority Veterans from 2015-2018, advising the Secretary of Veterans Affairs on systemic issues affecting minority veterans nationwide. Past positions held included Treasure for the Veterans County Service Officer Association of Texas; Women Veterans Coordination, Veterans County Service Officer Association of Texas; Assistant Regional Director for the San Antonio Region, Veterans County Service Officer Association of Texas. Veterans Liaison for VITAS Hospice Care; Liaison for the Gold Star Families in Bexar County; Advisory to the US Army Survivor Outreach Service Program and Advisor to the Alamo Community College District Veterans Affairs Committee.
Ms. Castillo has received many award and recognition which include: Outstanding Employee of the Month for Dallas County, February 2018; Appreciation Award Plaque for Outreach Service from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 837; Outstanding Veterans County Service Officer of the Year Award 2011-2012 from the Veterans County Service Officer Association of Texas; and many more.
Ms Castillo graduated from Judson High School in Converse, Texas. Obtain her Bachelor’s
Degree in Social Work from Our Lady of the Lake University, San Antonio, Texas. She is
currently enrolled at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M
University and completing her Graduate Certificate in Public Management.
